Small daily habits for better mental wellbeing

Seven realistic daily habits that support emotional wellbeing, and simple ways to make them stick.

By Teresa Andrea JimenezPublished November 3, 2026

Big resolutions are hard to keep. Small habits, repeated often, are what actually change how we feel. Here are realistic daily habits that support emotional wellbeing, especially during stressful seasons.

Start smaller than you think

Pick one habit, not five. Make it so small it feels almost too easy, like two minutes rather than twenty. Consistency matters more than size.

Seven habits worth trying

  1. A ten-minute walk, ideally outside and in daylight.
  2. A glass of water before coffee to start the day gently.
  3. Three lines in a journal each night: one thing that happened, one feeling, one thing you are grateful for.
  4. A screen-free first 15 minutes after waking.
  5. One message to someone you care about each day.
  6. Two minutes of slow breathing before a stressful task; try box breathing.
  7. A consistent bedtime, even on weekends.

Make habits stick

  • Attach it to something you already do. “After I brush my teeth, I'll write three lines.”
  • Track it simply with a tick on a calendar.
  • Restart without guilt. Missing a day is normal. The habit is the returning.

When habits are not enough

If low mood, anxiety or stress make it hard to start even small habits, that is a sign to get support, not a sign of weakness. A free 15-minute Zoom consultation is a simple first step.
